Hardboard is engineered wood fibre pressed under heat and pressure into a dense, uniform sheet, normally at 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm or 3.0mm. Greyboard is a widely used name for the same material and the two terms are used interchangeably in packaging. What matters commercially is consistency of density and how cleanly the sheet holds a cut edge.

Match the caliper to the weight and fragility of what the box carries. Around 1.5mm suits light jewellery and small accessories, 2.0mm standard gifts and cosmetics, 2.5mm premium and heavier items, and 3.0mm is generally reserved for luxury presentation, bottles and large formats. Hardboard gives a smooth surface, clean cut edge and strong crush resistance, at a higher material cost. MDF is denser and often cheaper at thick calipers, but its edges are harder to finish cleanly. Corrugated is far lighter and cheaper, yet it flexes and takes compression damage when boxes are stacked.

Both approaches are common. A full paper wrap covers the surface, suiting print and foil work, while a partial wrap leaves the board exposed so fibre and cut edge stay visible. Exposed board is often chosen when the material itself is meant to be part of the design.

The insert follows the product. Cut foam and EVA give the closest hold for fragile or irregular items, moulded pulp suits lighter products where sustainability matters, and a folded paperboard cradle works for bottles, jars and rectangular goods. Velvet, suede or flocked facings can be added over any.

Yes. The magnet is seated in a routed channel in the lid and base, and we normally specify 2.0mm or heavier — thin board flexes, and a magnet in flexing board will not draw shut consistently. Heavier board holds the closure flat, so the pull feels the same on the hundredth box as the first.

Minimums depend on caliper, board area, structure, wrap, insert and finishing, because hardboard is costed by sheet area rather than by unit. Our team confirms the run quantity against your brief before quoting.

There is no single price. Thickness is the biggest lever and it is worth testing: stepping down from 2.5mm to 2.0mm often leaves the product just as protected. Beyond that, board area, how many parts the structure needs, what it is covered in, whether it takes an insert, how much is printed and any foil or embossing all move the number. Volume helps, because cutting and setup spread across the batch.

Hardboard is made from wood fibre and generally accepted in the paper recycling stream where local facilities take it, and it can be specified from FSC-certified or recycled fibre. Fully recyclable builds keep board, wrap and insert within one material family and avoid mixed laminates.
