Choosing a Lining That Will Not Scratch

Soft lining is easy to specify and easy to get wrong. Here is how to match velvet, suede and microfibre to polished and brushed metal so nothing marks inside the box.

A lining that scratches the product has failed at the only job it has. Polished metal, brushed finishes and coated surfaces all mark in different ways, so the choice should start from the surface rather than from the sample book. Here is how we match the lining to what it has to protect.

Rigid boxes compared with folding boxes

A rigid box interior lined in soft pile, holding a polished metal case clear of every edge.

How marks actually happen

Scratches rarely come from the lining material alone. They come from movement: a piece shifting against a fibre, a seam rubbing across a case, or a grain of grit picked up during handling working over a polished face. A lining that holds the product still has already done most of the protective work before any material is chosen.

The surface finish matters just as much. A mirror-polished case shows every mark, while a brushed or bead-blasted finish hides light contact but displays directional scratching the moment something drags across the grain. Tell us which you have and we will choose the pile depth and the cell to suit it, rather than defaulting to the softest option available.

Velvet, suede and microfibre compared

All three are soft contact surfaces, but they differ in pile depth, density and how they behave after repeated handling. The right answer depends on the finish of the product and how often the box will be opened in its life.

  • Velvet: a deeper pile that cushions well and looks rich, needing a cell deep enough that it does not compress flat.
  • Suede: a shorter matte pile that feels quieter in the hand and is less likely to leave pressure marks.
  • Microfibre: fine dense fibres that lift dust rather than grinding it across a polished face.
  • Flock: a short fibre layer bonded to the insert, practical for holding parts still without much bulk.

For polished metal we usually reach for a short-pile velvet or a fine microfibre, because the contact stays gentle and the fibres are less likely to trap particles. For brushed surfaces we tend towards suede, where a little texture in the lining sits comfortably beside the grain of the metal instead of fighting it.

Design the cell, not just the cloth

The lining is fitted into an insert tray, and the tray is what keeps the product from wandering. Cells should be cut to the product with just enough clearance to lift it out, and any seam, edge or join should sit away from the face that will be seen first. That detail decides whether a box still looks clean after a month on a shelf.

Watch for pressure points as well. A lining stretched over a hard edge will print a line onto a soft finish after a few weeks in storage, so we break sharp corners inside the cell and keep the support flat beneath the piece. Small things, but they are what a customer notices on opening.

Checking it with your own product

We always prefer to test with the real item. Put the product into the sample, close the box, carry it and open it again. Look at the surface under a raking light, where any fresh mark shows up immediately. If something is wrong, we change the pile depth, the cell size or the material before bulk production begins.

Choosing a lining that will not scratch is straightforward once you start from the surface and the way the piece will move. Match the lining to the finish, hold the product still and approve a sample, and the interior stays as clean as the outside on the day it is opened.
